Medicare Coverage Made Easier to Understand

EXPLORE MEDICARE OPTIONS

Understand Your Medicare Coverage Options

Original Medicare

Original Medicare is the federal health insurance program that includes Part A for hospital coverage and Part B for medical coverage. It provides a foundation of Medicare benefits, but it does not cover every healthcare expense.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans provide Part A and Part B benefits and may include additional benefits such as prescription drug, dental, vision, hearing, fitness, or other services depending on the plan.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Supplement Insurance helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare does not cover, such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies and work alongside Original Medicare.

Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D)

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Coverage, formularies, pharmacy networks, and costs vary by plan, so comparing your medications with available plans is important when choosing coverage.

Medicare Eligibility & Enrollment

Most people become eligible for Medicare around age 65, while some people may qualify earlier because of certain disabilities or medical conditions. Enrollment periods and deadlines matter because delaying enrollment in certain parts of Medicare can sometimes result in late-enrollment penalties.

Help Comparing Medicare Options

Medicare choices can vary based on your healthcare needs, medications, preferred doctors, location, and budget. Emergent Insurance Agency can help you understand available Medicare coverage options and compare plans so you can make an informed decision.

Which Medicare option might be right for me?

Original Medicare

A good starting point for people who want broad access to doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare. You may also consider separate prescription drug coverage and Medicare Supplement Insurance to help with certain out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage

May be a good fit if you prefer receiving your Medicare benefits through one private plan. Many plans include prescription drug coverage and may offer additional benefits, but provider networks, costs, and benefits vary by plan and location.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

May be worth considering if you have Original Medicare and want help with certain out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Medigap works with Original Medicare rather than replacing it.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

Designed to help cover prescription medications. When comparing plans, it’s important to check whether your medications are covered, what they may cost, and which pharmacies participate in the plan’s network.

Not Sure Which Option Fits?

Your medications, doctors, healthcare needs, budget, and location can all affect which Medicare coverage may be appropriate. Emergent Insurance Agency can help you compare available options and understand the differences before you make a decision.

Understanding Medicare Enrollment Periods

Initial Enrollment Period

For most people, the Initial Enrollment Period begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and continues for 3 months afterward. This is generally your first opportunity to enroll in Medicare Parts A and B.

Medicare Open Enrollment Period

From October 15 through December 7 each year, people with Medicare can make certain changes to their Medicare Advantage or prescription drug coverage. Changes generally take effect January 1 of the following year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

From January 1 through March 31, people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan may switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.

Special Enrollment Periods

Certain life events or circumstances may allow you to enroll in or change Medicare coverage outside the standard enrollment periods. The timing and options available depend on the qualifying situation.

Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts 6 months and generally begins the first month you are age 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this period, you have important federal protections when purchasing a Medigap policy.

Why Enrollment Timing Matters

Missing certain Medicare enrollment periods may limit your options or result in late-enrollment penalties in some situations. If you’re unsure which enrollment period applies to you, Emergent Insurance Agency can help you understand your options and important deadlines.

Medicare Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at darline.candio@emergentinsured.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Original Medicare is the federal Medicare program and includes Part A and Part B. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a Medicare-approved private insurance plan. Medicare Advantage plans may include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits, but costs, provider networks, and benefits vary by plan.

No. Medigap is designed to supplement Original Medicare and cannot be used with a Medicare Advantage plan. When getting started with Medicare, you can generally choose Medicare Advantage or Original Medicare with the option to purchase Medigap, but you cannot have both Medicare Advantage and Medigap.

Prescription drug coverage is available through Medicare Part D. If you have Original Medicare, you can generally enroll in a separate Medicare drug plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage. Each drug plan has its own list of covered medications, called a formulary.

With Original Medicare, you can generally use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans may have provider networks, so it is important to check whether your preferred doctors and hospitals participate in a plan before enrolling.

Yes. You must continue paying your Medicare Part B premium when enrolled in Medicare Advantage. Depending on the plan, you may also have an additional plan premium, although some Medicare Advantage plans have a $0 plan premium.

Consider your doctors, hospitals, prescription medications, expected healthcare needs, premiums, deductibles, copayments, provider networks, drug coverage, and other plan benefits. Emergent Insurance Agency can help you review available options and understand important differences before you enroll.
