Important Medicare Enrollment Periods

Medicare has specific enrollment periods. Missing certain deadlines may affect when coverage begins and, in some cases, may result in late-enrollment penalties.

  • Initial Enrollment Period: Generally a 7-month period that begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months afterward. State of return (e.g. unworn)

  • Annual Enrollment Period: October 15–December 7. Medicare beneficiaries can make certain changes to Medicare Advantage and prescription drug coverage for the following year.

  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period: January 1–March 31. People already enrolled in Medicare Advantage can make certain changes during this period.

  • Special Enrollment Periods: Certain circumstances or life events may allow you to enroll in or change Medicare coverage outside the regular enrollment periods.

Enrollment rules and eligibility can vary by individual circumstances. Confirm current dates and requirements with Medicare.gov.
